About Don L Williams

Don L Williams

Don L Williams began playing guitar in the early 60's, and was influenced by the British Invasion and the folk movement of the time. His father was also a musician and played country music which provided additional influence. In the military he started learning a modified Travis style finger picking from a friend while stationed overseas, which he added to his playing style. His current musical tastes run the gamut from folk, classic rock, americana, and alt country to name a few. In addition to many well known artists, he also listens to many independent singer/songwriters and bands such as Justin Townes Earle, Blue Rodeo, Trampled by Turtles, 16 Horsepower, Adam Carroll, Mecano, The Devil Makes Three, and many more too numerous to mention. His taste is eclectic. In addtion to guitar, he also plays mandolin and harmonica, and dabbles with ukulele, dulcimers, Native American style flute, and banjo.

Following several years of very little musical activity while pursuing his education, work, and raising a family, Don was invited to join a Praise and Worship band at his local church, and soon found himself playing guitar again. Later, he bought a mandolin and began playing that with the band to augment the acoustic guitars. While playing in the band, he became friends with some of the other musicians who were also songwriters, and began playing music outside of the church band. This led to Don trying his own hand at songwriting. The natural progression from guitar player to songwriter to singer/songwriter followed and he eventually began performing his songs publicly.

Influences include John Prine, Bob Dylan, Slaid Cleaves, Gillian Welch and a multitude of other independent singer/songwriters who weave stories into song. He has three CDs of all original songs: "Dry Rain and Other Southern Folk Tales", "Back to Nothingville", and the latest "The Rain Comes Down".
